Can you improve your business by contributing to solving social issues?

It’s hard to ignore the fact that there are quite some social problems in the Netherlands, as there are in other parts of the world. A social issue is a problem that affects a large number of individuals within a society. There are a lot of different opinions surrounding this topic and the government intervenes to help solve the issue.

On Monday, March 4th I gave a presentation about some social issues in the Netherlands, specifically: climate change, ageing and discrimination. I asked the students to solve one of the 3 issues in groups. Each group choose one issue and a specific focus. After a few brainstorm sessions, they had to choose one solution which they would further elaborate on paper. Two presentations, a ton of questions, a break and a few energizers later, the students had to change their own business idea’s in a way that would help solve one of these social issues. By doing so -seeing an issue as an opportunity- it will most definitely change your business model and strategy. There are small steps you could take that could not only contribute to the environment or the people surrounding you, but which could also help differentiate your company from competitors.

So my question to you is: What are you currently doing (even if it’s something small) to contribute in solving social issues in your country? If you’re not doing anything at the moment, what could you do and how would that effect your business?
